Car design

Car design is one field that is growing rapidly. The main purpose of the car design is to improve the visual appearance of the car or in other terms the aesthetics of the car. The other secondary goal of car design is to create the product concept. If properly implemented car design can prove really crucial in the overall performance of the vehicle. A good design can not only improve the looks of the car but can also improve its efficiency. Expertise from various fields is required for an efficient car design. The team consists of members from various disciplines. The car design is basically handled by designers who usually have an art background and a degree in transport or industrial design.

The overall car design comprises of four designs. The work is divided into different teams, each for a particular sector. The various types of designs involved in car design are as follows:

1) Exterior Design: The exterior of any car plays a very important role from the point of view of the customers. A good exterior design can greatly affect increase the sakes figure of any company. The stylist who is responsible for the development of the exterior car design has to take care of the proportions, shape and surfaces of the car. A rough drawing of the exterior design is developed by carrying out the whole process using various manual and digital equipments. Further improvement in this basic design is executed and approved. Generally, a physical model of the same is also created using clay. The data from all these work outs are then collected and analyzed before creating a full sized mock-up of the final design. More often companies use a 6 axis computer controlled robots to turn the clay model into a computer program. This is then printed using large amount of clay.

2) Interior Design: Interior design is again a very vital aspect both from the point of view of the designer and customers. The stylists responsible for interior design has to develop proportions, shape and surfaces for the seats, facia, trim panels etc. The interior designer has to be really creative so that he or she can develop a design that gives lot of comfort to the users. Interior design is really important from the point of the view of the ergonomics and the comfort of the passengers. The stylist should also try to incorporate some new exciting features for the users so as to attract more and more customers towards their product.

3) Color and Trim Design: The color of the vehicle is also quite important. The research, design and development of all interior and exterior colors and materials used on the car are the sole responsibility of the designers who are dealing with this section. There are various types of materials used in a car. Some of them are paints, plastics, fabric designs, leather, grains, carpet, headliner and wood trim. The color, contrast, texture and pattern should be given such that it not only gives a stylish look both to the interior as well as to the exterior look but it should also enhance the overall look of the car. The designers should always try to give a unique look to their product so as to attract more and more customers towards themselves. Both the exterior and interior designers should work in tandem so that they can produce the best results. Designers in this field try to take cue from other disciplines such as fashion, home furnishing and architecture. The designers have to put in a lot of research work not only to understand the global trends but also to foresee the future and to come up with something which looks ahead of its time. Specific teams are created for keeping track of global trend and the effect they are creating on the world market. This information is then used by the designers in order to develop themes and concepts. These are further refined and tested on the vehicle models before getting approved finally.

4) Graphic Design: The graphics design is something which has come up very recently with the growth in the computer aided designing. Graphics design can really enhance the outer look of the car. The graphics design is basically concerned with the designing of items such as badges, dials, switches, kick or tread strips, liveries, flames, racing stripes etc. Some of these designs try to give a sporty look to the car while there are also others that give a stylish look. These designs are readily available in the form of stickers.

Modeling of car design is quite critical. Nowadays there are many tools available in the market that can not only make this process easier but that can also make it less time consuming and hence more efficient. CAD modeling is the latest development in this field. The computers are used to basically automate the whole process of car design. Initially this technique was quite costly and hence was not very popular with the car designers but with the advancement in the technology, CAD got cheaper and cheaper and today almost all companies, whether small or big, use this technique in the process of car design. Some of the more popular CAD programs available in the worldwide market are Alias AutoStudio, ICEM Surf, CATIA etc.

Aerodynamics is also a major field that is related with the car design. It?s important with respect to the operating efficiencies of a vehicle. One of the key issues that are dealt under the category of aerodynamics is pressure sensitive paint. The paints which are done on the car should be such that it could resist high air pressure and should not come out from it. After all the car designing is over and a final model of the car is developed, the model undergoes what is known as wind tunnel testing.

Since manufacturing coupled with car designing field is on the rise, lots of people are moving into this field. And that increases demand of people with car designing expertise.
