Ellwood cityEllwood City is a district in both Beaver and Lawrence Counties in Pennsylvania, United States. It is situated 30 miles (48 km) north-west of Pittsburgh and nearly 8 miles (13 km) south by south-east of New Castle. Formerly, Ellwood City supported a lot of light industries like steel car factory, steel tube mills, building stone and limestone mines, machine shops and foundries, coal mining, etc. In 1910, 2,243 inhabitants resided in Ellwood City, 3,902 resided there in 1920 and 12,329 resided there in 1940. In the 2000 census, the population was 8,688.
In spite of its name, it is not in fact a city by any means, on the contrary a borough. The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has hundreds of boroughs, and numerous townships, but no more than two towns, Bloomsburg and McCandless, both in Pennsylvania.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has an overall region of 2.4 square miles (6.2 km). 2.3 square miles (6.1 km) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.1 km) of it (2.09%) is covered with water.
According to the census of 2000, there were 8,688 citizens, 3,716 households and 2,393 families living in the borough. The population concentration was 3,716.6 persons for every square mile (1,433.5/km). There were 4,006 lodging units at a mean concentration of 1,713.7/sq mi (661.0/km). The cultural framework of the borough was 98.22% of Whites, 0.81% of African Americans, 0.09% of Native Americans, 0.23% of Asians, 0.18% from other ethnic groups and 0.47% from two or more tribes. Hispanic or Latino of any ethnic group was 0.60% of the entire population.
There were 3,716 households among whom 26.6% had kids below the age of 18 residing with them, 47.3% were wedded pairs residing jointly, 12.6% had a female house holder without husband, and 35.6% were non families. 32.3% of all households were consisted of folks and 18.2% had somebody residing unaccompanied who was 65 years of age or above. The standard household size was 2.32 and the standard family size was 2.94.
In the borough, the population was extensive in the company of 22.5% below the age of 18, 7.7% between the age of 18 to 24, 26.5% between the age of 25 to 44, 21.2% between the age of 45 to 64, and 22.1% who were 65 years of age or above. The middle age was 41 years.
The middle earnings for a household in the borough were $28,926, and the middle earnings for a family were $40,758. Males had middle earnings of $31,703 against $21,285 for females. The per capita income was $15,784. Approximately 8.6% of families and 12.3% of the whole population were below poverty line, together with 15.9% of individuals below age 18 and 11.1% of individuals of age 65 or above.
