Debt crisis

Very often we hear the term debt crisis. Though the term is quite familiar to all of us, still it needs to be understood fully as the definition known to us is quite vague. The term debt crisis denoted a situation in which any company, individual or even a country owes more to various other parties, organizations or country than it can actually repay or even interest on it. Thus, if a person has a repaying capacity of $500 and he owes a debt of $2000 to others, it may be said that the person is suffering from debt crisis.

THE DEBT CRISIS OF DEVELOPING COUNTRIES

The developing countries often faces debt crisis due to number of reasons. The situation remains the same; it owes more money to others that it can actually repay. There are still many developing countries in the world that are facing debt crisis in a very serious manner. There are millions of dollars that have to be repaid but the sources are very few. In many circumstances, the term debt crisis is used for the indebtedness of different developing countries, which became quite severe in the year 1980 and it really threatened the stability of the international systems like the international banking system. This resulted because many of the developing debtor countries were not in a position to repay the debt or ever service their debts. No doubt, what kind of debt crisis it is ; it always brings obstacles to the development of a person, organization, nation etc. The debt crisis also results in arising of many problems and the rift between the rich and poor continues to broaden. The same is the case with the developing countries. Let us now discuss the various aspects and reasons of debt crisis next.

VARIOUS ASPECTS AND REASONS

There are many aspects that are related to debt crisis which needs to be understood completely. One of the aspects that need to be understood completely about the debt crisis especially about the third world debt crisis is that it occurs because of the siphoning off of funds due to many reasons. When it happens with the already fund deprived person or country, it aggravates the matter. This is the reason why rich is becoming more rich and poor is becoming poorer. One of the terms that are used quite often with the debt crisis is the Odious Debt. This is basically a type of debt crisis that results from the illegitimate loans taken as a result of unfair debt. Whenever a loan is granted illegitimately to any person or country, debt crisis is bound to come. This is because the loan is not used for the purpose for which it was granted and instead, it is used contrary to the interest of various peoples. This is happened many times in the third world countries. When such loans are granted, a person cannot expect repayments of such loans in time, as there are no legitimate sources for the repayment also.

The other reason for the bad debt, as has been observed in many third world countries is that they were granted their independent status when the superpowers ruling them left them with heavy debt burdens. Due to this, many of third world countries faced debt crisis and even, some of them are still facing. One of various examples of this reason is South Africa. The debt crisis also occurs when there are net losses for any organization or country that has already taken a loan and is not able to repay it. In the case of third world countries, it is true to a great extent. One of the very renowned aspects of debt crisis is that when any person, country etc faces debt crisis, it gets more deeply rooted with the passage of time that it really becomes impossible for him to come out of debt. This has already happened with many countries. This happens because first of all, the person or country facing debt crisis has already limited sources and the condition even becomes worse by the cost of servicing of loans, that is, the interest that is payable on the debt taken. If the interest is not paid in time, there are penalties that are imposed and it even aggravates the situation. Thus, debt crisis itself is responsible for its severing up.

One of the most important reasons of debt crisis is the mismanaged spending. Whenever there is mismanaged spending by any person, organization or country which has taken loan, the debt crisis is bound to happen. This is because when any person or country takes a loan, there has to be a managed or correlated spending so that the total spending can balance with total earning. But when the spending becomes more than earning, it becomes impossible to repay the loan within current means and thus, it results in debt crisis. It is important to note here that in spending, the cost of loan servicing is also included. Thus, it is advised here that a person should spend with respect to his earning otherwise he would not be able to repay the loan in time and this is nothing but starting of debt crisis. In the past, many third world countries slipped into debt crisis due to mismanaged spending.

Given above are the various aspects related to debt crisis.
