This tutorial shows how to create a simple dollar coin.

This tutorial is uses the same techniques as in the Recycling Button tutorial.

  1. The rim or border. To create the border we use the punching technique and in order to get a 14 px wide rim and with a small circle of 147 px, our large circle will be 147 + (2x14) = 175 px diameter.
  2. As a result, draw first a 175 px diameter circle with the Ellipse Tool. A second smaller circle of 147 px then Clone it and hide one copy by clicking the eye icon Dollar Coin in the Layers panel. See Figure 2.

  3. The 2 circles should be on top of each other with the smaller circle exactly at the center. Use the Guides or align panel Window > align (align horizontal center then align vertical center).

  5. The punching. Select the 2 circles, Modify > Combine Paths > Punch . Make visible the hidden circle. You have now 2 parts: a ring and a smaller circle at the center which will be the background.

  7. The rim or border
  8. Create a rim with a good punch!

    The rim of a coin is the sharp circular (or otherwise shaped) edge which surrounds the coin design.

    Apply a linear gradient. See Figure 4.

  9. Body of the coin. 3 effects will be applied: 2 Inner Shadow and 1 linear gradient. See Figure 5.
