Straight and Curly Quotes

A bit of a vocabulary. Straight quotes are called programmers' quotes and curly smart or typographer's quotes.

The Issue

Fireworks CS4 and later use the Adobe Type Engine (ATE). Once ATE was introduced in Fireworks CS4, auto smart quotes were introduced, too. Photoshop has the option to disable or enable them, but Fireworks CS4 and Illustrator have not such an option, thus, all quotes are converted to smart without any other option.

In Fireworks CS4, Fireworks auto-converts all imported quotes to smart quotes, no matter if you copy them from Word or Notepad, CS3, Illustrator, etc. The Only way you can insert straight quotes (single or double) in Fireworks CS4 is to copy/paste such quotes from Photoshop.

Steps. Open Photoshop CS4 and disabled the smart quotes in the Preferences in order to type straight quotes. Go to Edit > Preferences > Type and uncheck Use Smart Quotes.

Type straight quotes (single and double). To be able to copy/paste quotes from Photoshop into Fw CS4, you must be in "text editing mode" (cursor blinking in the text block in Ps), select the quotes, ctrl+c, then paste them in Fireworks CS5.
