Bracelets made in gold, platinum, silver or steel are a fashion statement today. They are worn by both men and women though there are variations in style and types of gemstones used.
Let us now look at the origin of bracelets
Bracelets where known as armlets which means an ornament which sits on the upper arm or rather an arm ring. The orgin of the term braclet is from the latin word "brachile" meaning " of the arm" which is through the old french word "barcel".
In Latin Amercian bracelets were worn to protect against evil eye. This is the result of excessive admiration or jealour looks by other people. Newborn babies wear azabache ( a gold bracelet or necklace with black or red coral charm in the form of fist) to protect them from evil eye.
Bulgarians follow a tradition called Martenitsa which means tying a red and white string around the wrist to please Baba Marta to make spring come early.
Indian women wear bangles whose type and number denotes her marital status.
Ancient Egyptians made bracelets out of bones, stones and wood for religious and spiritual interest. The Scarab bracelet is a symbol of ancient egypt and was wrapped along with linen bandages of mummies. Scarab is a god according to mythology pushed the sun across the sky.

Silicone rubber is used as a material for producing sports bracelets. This was popularized by Nike and Lance Amrstrong. They are called baller id bands, wrist bands or baller bands and are used as low cost tools for various awareness, information and charity campaigns.
The thin in line diamond bracelet with symmetrical pattern of diamonds is called tennis braclet. The story goes that in 1987 Chris Evert former world No. 1 tennis player wore this braclet while playing US open. This accidentally broke during the match and the match was interrupted to allow Chris to recover her diamonds. This incident created a new name in the jewelery items and so the name tennis bracelet.
This piece of jewelry has decorative pendants or trinkets which are the wearer's personal charms. Italian charm braclets are now creating a trend in the market with the unique feature of individual pieces soldered flat onto the surface of the link.
Solid Form of bracelets made of some metal is referred to as bangle. They may be smooth or with designs or set with stones. In India glass bangles are common. They are worn in groups of 2, 6, 12 and make a pleasant sound on arm movement which is similar to the wind chimes.
The 80's saw a rise in "slap bracelets" which are made of felt covered metal strips that curved around the wearer's wrist when hit gently against it.
What is white gold?
An alloy of gold and some white metal like silver and palladium is called white gold. white gold can be 9 to 18 kt. 18 kt white gold is made by mixiing 75% gold with 25% other metals such as silver and palladium. Yellow gold uses 25% of copper and zinc. Hence the metals used differ but the amount of gold is the same.
Nickel was used earlier. Modern trend discontinued the use of Nickel as it causes reactions with some people.
After making the jewellery the white gold is coated with Rhodium. This gives the actual white colour to the gold because white gold is actually light grey colour. To keep the original white colour the jewellery should be re coated with rhodium after 12 to 18 months.
