Tutorial

There are always many ways to do something but here are two techniques to make items or people stand out.

  1. First technique
  2. This technique is non-destructive and is using the masking technique

    1. Select your image bitmap.
    2. In the Properties panel, look for the filters box. Click the [+] to add a filter, and choose Adjust Color > Hue/Saturation.
    3. How to make items and people stand out

      Figure 1: Hue/Saturation

    4. Set the Hue/Saturation values. 0 for Hue, -100 for Saturation and 0 for Lightness (make sure Colorize is not selected). This will turn the image to grayscale.
    5. How to make items and people stand out

      Figure 2: Grayscale

    6. Clone the image (Edit > Clone).
    7. Remove the Hue/Saturation to the first image so it is now back to color. You now have two images, the one below is grayscale, the one above is colored. Now you just have to make the colored one above be isolated to the subject.

      Figure 3: Two images

    9. I would use the Pen Tool to outline the Knight. I would then add a white fill, select the path and the colored image, and choose Modify > Mask > Group as Mask.

  3. Second technique
  4. This technique is not using masking. Watch this short video.
