In this tutorial you will learn how to blur the background of digital photos with Adobe Fireworks in a non destructive way.

Open a picture

Open a picture in Adobe Fireworks and clone it.

Pen Tool

As Adobe Fireworks has no magnetic lasso we will use the Pen Tool (P) to trace the object in the photo you want to remain sharp. In this case I select the smiling woman and when it is done, I convert path to Marquee: Modify > Convert Path to Marquee. The Pen Tool gives more precision than the Lasso Tool for example.

Masking

Add a mask with the Add a mask option at the bottom of the Layers panel.

Filters

From the live filters, select From the Filter menu, select the type of Blur that you would like to apply to the background.
