Fireworks CS4 New Updater
Fireworks team is planning a new Updater for Fireworks CS4. This Updater will fix the Snow Leopard crash on quit bug, as well as other high priority crash and data loss bugs that we’re aware of.
The Updater is expected to be available later in the second Quarter 2010.

Apostrophe in startup screen

Insert Quotes Command
This command is intended for both Fireworks CS3 and 4.
In Fireworks CS4, Fireworks auto-converts all imported quotes to smart quotes, no matter if you copy them from Word or Notepad, CS3, Illustrator. The Only way you can insert straight quotes (single or double) in Fireworks CS4 is to copy/paste such quotes from Photoshop.
On the other hand, in Fireworks CS3 the only way to get smart quotes is to import them from another application.

Straight quotes vs smart quotes
A bit of typogragraphy today with straight quotes and smart quotes.
The problem is that since Fireworks CS4 you no longer get straight quotes. What you type are smart quotes and the quotes you want to import are automatically converted into smart quotes. There is a workaround.

Copyright Auto Shape

“I use Adobe Fireworks to draw the comics. It’s intended for web design, but it’s also a very capable vector editing tool and it works beautifully if your work is going to end up on a website. Transitioning to print from Fireworks can be a pain though, because it wasn’t intended for that.
I don’t use photoshop and I’m actually pretty terrible with it. I have Illustrator and I was using it for a few months, but I ended up going back to Fireworks simply because I’m more comfortable with it and it’s better for creating web content.”

A very good article making comparison between Photoshop and Fireworks but this one goes into specifics and gives more details. It shows what is similar and what is different between the two.
People should follow this principle: you should use the right tool for the right job and Photoshop is not the right tool for webdesign, Fireworks is.
